Marianne Spraggins, president of Buy Hold America, the U.S. marketing company for a Black-owned Canadian money-management firm, has more than 20 years experience negotiating corporate financial investments. She may have a head for business, but the New York native lives for all things glamorous. "I love high fashion," she says. "I want the perfect fit, color and style, every day, for every occasion."

Style council: "It's not about a label or how much you spend. It's artistry. I'm a businesswoman, but getting dressed for me is a creative outlet. When I shop, a piece has to grab me. It's not 'What will this go with?' If I gasp, I buy it." Tip: A "bargain" isn't so if it sits in your closet. You'll be more inclined to wear items you love.

Jet-set savvy: "I travel a lot for work, usually meeting with people I've never met before. First impressions are crucial. I rely on key accessories--from the perfect Chanel bag to huge Lucite cuffs to a sexy Manolo sling back--and gorgeous, ladylike, well-tailored suits." Tip: A good tailor is your best friend. Clothing that fits perfectly truly takes you from ordinary to wow.

Shopping philosophy: "Where do I start? Shopping is an avocation for me. If I need something quickly, Bergdorf Goodman is right. If I have time to hunt, I'll go to Barneys or Benders." Tip: Go to your tried-and-true department stores when there's no time to spare. And build relationships with your favorite department managers. Once they're familiar with your style and size, they're usually happy to put pieces aside for you.
